If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to grow your own mushrooms we will be holding a how-to, hands-on workshop using “bucket tech” to grow Oyster Mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) at the Ukrainian History and Education Center here in Somerset on Saturday, February 7, 2026. Registration is required.

Ukraine has a strong mushroom foraging culture. Oyster mushrooms are found across Ukraine as well as in the United States, but if you’re uneasy about identifying mushrooms in the field (Some species are lethally poisonous if eaten!), cultivating mushrooms at home can be an attractive alternative.
Participants in this workshop will learn basic oyster mushroom ecology, how to “plant” oyster mushroom spawn in a 2-gallon food grade bucket, instructions on how to care for your own oyster mushroom bucket and recipes to enjoy these choice culinary fungi, as well as options for preservation. No experience necessary. Age 14+.
Whether you want to grow mushrooms to include in a healthy diet, try a different type of “gardening,” or just want to cultivate your curiosity about this prominent feature of Ukrainian cuisine and culture, this workshop is for you.
